As details of today's tragedy in Connecticut continue to unfold, please say a prayer for all those affected directly and indirectly (including ourselves). Then, take a minute to reflect on how fortunate you are to be surrounded by ALL we have. Give your family a call....Give them a hug...Tell them how much you love them. Life is too precious to assume anything anymore.
Eitaikyo Service tomorrow. Gotta get up early!
We had the opportunity today to participate in our Buddhist temple’s (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Aiea-Hongwanji-Mission/127707640594661) 110th year celebration. When we first joined them, they were about to celebrate their 100th year celebration. Wow, where did those 10 years go so quickly?!? When you think about 110 years… A structure of the community that was in place before most of the existing city was in place, before most of the roads were in place, before any sense of a city was even in place. A structure that initially sat at the base of a mountain in the midst of sugar cane fields. Who built it, and how has it lasted so long in the same place? When you think of Buddhism, many people first think of religion. However back 110 years ago, when many Japanese came to Hawaii to live and work mostly in the sugar cane fields, leaving the families and relatives that they knew back in Japan, a Buddhist temple was there as a social meeting place. A place where the homesick Japanese immigrants could feel comfort and a sense of belonging in a foreign land. If you trace most Buddhist temples in Hawaii, they all were built around the sugar cane fields. Who bought the lands? Who built the temples? That, I’m not really sure. However, I learned today that most have continued this 100+ year journey on the backs of their members. Blood, sweat, and tears is what a Buddhist temple in Hawaii is made of. They don’t ask members for any large sums of money, but through the years it continues because of the donated manpower and efforts of the men and women of the temple. Today, we had the chance to honor 24 living Keirokai members (those above the age of 80 and still making their mark at the temple) as well as said goodbye to another 9 that passed away just this year alone. These are just some of the important members that make up the existence of the the temple, and they are shown nothing but respect and honor as they slowly slow down themselves. Yes, our membership continues to get smaller through attrition because many younger generation don’t understand that Buddhism is NOT necessarily a religion, but rather a way of life. Because of the Aiea Hongwanji Preschool, Lotus Adult Day Care Center, and Hall Rentals, the temple will continue to sustain itself and be a social meeting place for any race or religion. Yes, even any religion is welcomed as we have a number of Christians that just enjoy coming to help around the temple. Who would have thought?
